This document contains information to help UNIX® and Red Hat Linux network file

sysfem (NFS) administrators understand the functions that they can perform using the

operating system 2.4 for PowerVault 70xN systems.

Setting Owner and Group IDs

Using the operating system 2.4, the PowerVault 70xN operating system sets both the owner

and group IDs to root (O, usually the administrator’s ID) for all files. Commands issued by

NFS users, including root, to change user and group file IDs do not have an effect on the ID

settings, and therefore, the settings do not change.

Control of the NFS user file and directory, and share access occurs in the following ways:

• Only root can create files or directories on a network share.

• NFS users with full access to the share can read or write existing files on a share.

• NFS users with full access to the share can create, delete, read, or write files and

directories within an existing direetory on a share.

Setting File Permissions

A feature that is unique to the operating system 2.4 is the method in which the operating

system sets file permissions. UNIX allows read (r), write (w), and execute (x) permissions

for each file to be set independently for three different levels: owner, group, and other. The

PowerVault 70xN operating system differs because it uses only one of these levels. If you

grant full access or read-only access to a share, the system sets the same read, write, or

execute permissions for all three levels for all of the files.
